I issued the command
port upgrade outdated
At some point it failed, with the error:

The error message is probably correct. In addition to the +fortran variant, try specifying a fortran compiler variant (they are g95, gcc44, gcc45, gcc46, gcc47, gcc48, gcc49, gfortran).
