I now see the cacti
port would need the variants aswell. I couldn't test this, because the (old and obsolete) mysql5
port doesn't build on my system.

I added variant for mysql from dovecot2 but not tested for now, just destroot/install with default variant mysql56

You must only set default_variants if none of the other conflicting variants has been selected by the user. See PortfileRecipes#default_variants. The default mysql variant we've been using in other ports is +mysql5 but it's high time that we changed that to +mysql56 so we may as well start with that here.

add the change to check if no other variant selected. keep default to mysql56. same change on #43232

Please note the there is an old request ticket #23117 still open, so formally this is a duplicate. However this submission ticket is more useful and should supersede the older ticket.
Can you add variants for the different MySQL versions and derivates in MacPorts? Look at the dovecot2, akonadi, or zabbix2 ports for examples.
Other than that, looks good to me.
