Just tried the suggested workaround and got the same error.

Oops, my bad!
The workaround I suggested calls for Apple's clang, which on 10.6 will be at most clang 3.0, not recent enough for proper C++11 support. For that, you'll have to use a GCC version provided by MacPorts, gcc 4.8 or newer.
port install QtCurve configure.compiler=macports-gcc-4.8
(or 4.9).
NB: I haven't tried with macports-clang-3.4; it might work (and thus build on the buildbots).

As a temporary work-around, try building with
configure.compiler=clang
, e.g.port install QtCurve configure.compiler=clang
