kerberos5: breaks system kerberos just by being installed — at Version 1

At my workplace, I need to run kinit for SSH (I have GSSAPIAuthentication yes set in SSH config). Specifically, this is the command I run: /usr/bin/kinit --keychain username@EXAMPLE.COM. I see the following error message when Macports kerberos5 is installed: kinit: krb5_get_init_creds: unable to reach any KDC in realm EXAMPLE.COM, tried 4 KDCs.
Force uninstalling kerberos5 fixes the issue, but kerberos5 is reinstalled whenever I upgrade my ports, since it is a dependency of several other ports. Why does the kerberos5 port break system Kerberos?
