When compiling gtk2-2.10.6_0 without perl installed an error occurs. Installing perl5.8 solves the error.
This package should probably be added to the dependency list

Hmm. I'm not sure where the problem is. I definitely don't have the perl port installed and gtk2 compiled/installed fine for me (it was a clean install and it also pulled in the atk dependency properly). Does it work if you force install atk and then try gtk2 again?

Well perhaps my memory is wrong but I thought that I'd seen this more than once after a clean MacPorts install and immediate GTK2 intall. And I had remembered installing perl manually and resuming the gtk2 port install and then atk installed ok and gtk2. But I see perl isn't a dependency of atk so I don't know.

Well it isn't a problem now. I just did a clean install of gtk2 and it doesn't require perl.
I've noticed that too, but I think it fails on the atk dependency if perl isn't installed. Assigning to maintainer.
