Description
- Mac OS X 10.4.8 + Mac Pro
- Install DarwinPorts from DarwinPorts-1.3.1-10.4.dmg per:
http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/macports/wiki/InstallingMacPorts
- $ sudo port install php4
=>
Error: Target com.apple.activate returned: Image error: /opt/local/lib/php4/.channels/.alias/pear.txt already exists and does not belong to a registered port. Unable to activate port php4. Error: Status 1 encountered during processing.

There used to be many reports of this problem for php5. I "fixed" it at the time by removing all PEAR support from php5. Jyrki brought it back as a variant in r20736 six months ago and I haven't heard any problems since then. Maybe that did the trick, and maybe that logic could be applied to the php4 port too.
