Although I rejected your patch, I did fix a typo in the portfile in changeset:22745
I rejected the patch because it wiped out the main configure.env variables. As commited, in changeset:22745, it appends the i386-specific configure.env variables to the main configure.env variables.
(I also changed the ticket properties to reflect a ticket against a port instead of against the ports system)
