The remaining changes from your diff that I did not commit:
- Whitespace changes. I'd like to do more extensive whitespace changes but would like to discuss them with waqar first.
- Removing the ranlib line. That line was added as a fix for issue #1508. Do you have reason to believe that it's no longer necessary?

seems to be run already during the end of the build stage.

I was deliberately not updating to libpng 1.2.19 because it does not compile properly on Intel Macs when not using the universal variant. But I see that 1.2.20 has now been released, which was supposed to contain the fix, so I'll see about updating this now.
