This ticket appears to supersede #11987. Could the maintainer please comment on whether these changes should be made to the portfile?

In fact, octave 2.9.16 has now been released.

Brent Fulgham notes in #12144 that octave 2.9.17 is now released which apparently builds better under Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

I committed the update to 2.9.15 in r31191. Thank you, Andrew, for the patches.

This obsoletes #11987, although it also mentioned that octave-forge could now be removed, which I have not done because I do not know the implications. I've asked the maintainer for advice.
