This seems to be the behavior described in ticket 13085, which was closed because the problem was supposedly fixed. Not sure what the difference is between the closed ticket and the behavior I'm seeing.

Sadly, that's not the answer:
[bernstei@cstd-beta bernstei]$ sudo port selfupdate Password: MacPorts base version 1.600 installed Downloaded MacPorts base version 1.600 The MacPorts installation is not outdated and so was not updated selfupdate done! [bernstei@cstd-beta bernstei]$ sudo port install xfig Password: ---> Activating xfig 3.2.5_2 Error: Target org.macports.activate returned: Image error: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults already exists and does not belong to a registered port. Unable to activate port xfig. Error: Status 1 encountered during processing.

This should be fixed in r34507.
You will need to run
port selfupdate port uninstall xfig port install xfig

Hmm,
for me it works fine. I have xfig installed on my G5 and my MacBook Pro. Are you sure that have the newest port files (port selfupdate)? Sorry, for the question :-)
