I attempted to udpate to git-core 1.5.4.5_0 and the port will not activate. The error is...
Error: Target org.macports.activate returned: Image error: /opt/local/bin/git-filter-branch already exists and does not belong to a registered port. Unable to activate port git-core. Error: Status 1 encountered during processing.

Maybe you interrupted a previous installation in the activation phase?

Not that I recall. I had a previous version installed, tried to update it, and it wouldn't reactivate. I don't believe at this point this is invalid but I'll leave that decision up to you.

I went through and moved all the existing git files (e.g. /opt/local/bin/git-*, /opt/local/share/git-*) and the install was able to complete. I'm not sure whose job it is to remove these old files but a clean install seems to work.
