Jeremy, here's my updated patch, based on yours. I changed the whitespace so it matches what was in the portfile; deleted the configure.cxxflags-append line that was there from before because I wouldn't expect that to be necessary (that kind of thing usually goes in configure.cppflags where MacPorts already puts it); deleted the configure.ldflags-append line you added because what you're appending is what MacPorts already puts there; fixed your default_variants line (needed a "+" before the variant name). And I filed an upstream bug report for the build problem. I talk a bit more about my experience trying to update this port on the mailing list, where Scott Haneda asked how I handle port updates and I picked this port at random as an example.

The developer (who was also until recently the port maintainer) closed my upstream bug saying he is no longer maintaining alphamail. His explanation for the problems did not make sense to me nor give me a clue how we can fix it. Unless somebody else knows how to make alphamail compile, I'm inclined to delete the port, since it has obviously never worked or been used by anybody.
