Description
A Mac OS X native version of Abiword has not been released since 2.4.5. However, GTK now has a quartz backend that does not require X11.
I'd like to propose that the abiword package be updated to 2.6 and the Mac OS X native version be abandoned. People who want to avoid X11 can build the GTK version against GTK/Quartz.
There are a few issues in the abiword codebase that are keeping me from building abiword 2.6 against GTK/Quartz. See Abisource bug #11793.

This produces a Cocoa build of AbiWord 2.6.5, but it completely fails to work. Maybe someone else can figure out what is needed.

Work on the AbiWord / Cocoa code has begun again. See http://uwog.net/news/?p=25.

Upstream AbiWord version 2.7.7 has made a lot of progress with the Cocoa code. There are a few compile issues left (Mac OS X 10.4), but it is clear that the code is getting a lot of attention.

There currently is no maintainer for this port so the best approach would be for someone who is interested in the port to update the Portfile as necessary and attach a diff (patch) against the current port for consideration by a committer. Since (from your comments) that the code seems to be unstable still perhaps a new abiword-devel port would be appropriate.

As of version 2.8, AbiWord / Cocoa compiles again. However, there is one issue that breaks the build of Snow Leopard. The fix for Snow Leopard is documented at AbiWord Bugzilla #12446.

Abiword 2.8.6 seems to build and work fine (at least on Tiger).

Abiword 2.8.6 (based on the portfile patch provided by rudloff) builds from source and installs without errors on Mac OS X 10.5.8 (i386). Afaict the application works as expected (though I haven't tested it beyond launching and using some basic text editing functions).
I'd be interested in a GTK+ variant for the port, based on GTK+/X11 (and optionally, if supported upstream, on GTK+/Quartz).
