Is the below error caused by the tcl command cd having been removed from trunk I read about on the wiki howto runningtrunk?

No, that error causes a different message, in this case it appears to not be finding perl. First, is your MacPorts install prefix /Users/asdf/.macports? Also, make sure your perl5.8 port is up to date (current is 5.8.9_2).
