perl 5.8.9 build failure -- config.sh line 90 syntax error near unexpected token

Hello MacPorts gurus,

This is on a 15.4" MacBookPro, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X 10.5.8, MacPorts 1.8.0, XCode 3.1.3.

I was installing rdiff-backup, latest version 1.2.8. MacPorts was installing all the dependencies. After it installed about 18 of them, it got to perl-5.8.9 where the error occurred:

Just prior to installing rdiff-backup, I installed md5sha1sum successfully. So at this point only the following ports are present:

I've googled around and searched MacPorts for hints of this same problem, but no luck. Yet it seems weird that nobody else would have run into this. So I suspect that my installation is somehow broken. Still, there is nothing custom on this Mac -- everything was installed using defaults.

Any help or insight will be much appreciated!

I think we need to see the debug output to help with this. Normally MacPorts only shows the last 30 lines of error, and it looks like there was more output than that here. Can you clean the port and try again with the debug switch?

sudo port clean perl5.8
sudo port -d install perl5.8 2>&1 | tee ~/Desktop/perl5.8.txt
bzip2 ~/Desktop/perl5.8.txt

Then attach perl5.8.txt.bz2 from your desktop to this ticket.

perl5.8.txt.bz2 is now attached. I see problems about half-way down in that debug output. Bunch of /sys/* not found.

Well, I was too hasty. Yes, there are a few sys/* things not found, but there are many sys/* things found too. So that's not it.

Reading the log more carefully, I see this:

gconvert NOT found.
gcvt() found.
sprintf() found.
I'll use sprintf to convert floats into a string.

So if sprintf() gives trouble, would there be way to make it use gcvt() instead? And if so, how?
