I tried cleaning and installing again and it worked now. Looks like groff was updated and that fixed the error:
$ sudo port clean gnome-desktop ---> Cleaning gnome-desktop $ sudo port install gnome-desktop ---> Computing dependencies for groff ---> Fetching groff ---> Attempting to fetch groff-1.20.1.tar.gz from http://mirrors.kernel.org/gnu/groff ---> Verifying checksum(s) for groff ---> Extracting groff ---> Configuring groff ---> Building groff ---> Staging groff into destroot ---> Installing groff @1.20.1_1 ---> Activating groff @1.20.1_1 ---> Cleaning groff ---> Computing dependencies for gnome-desktop ---> Fetching gnome-desktop ---> Verifying checksum(s) for gnome-desktop ---> Extracting gnome-desktop ---> Applying patches to gnome-desktop ---> Configuring gnome-desktop ---> Building gnome-desktop ---> Staging gnome-desktop into destroot ---> Installing gnome-desktop @2.26.3_0 ---> Activating gnome-desktop @2.26.3_0 ---> Cleaning gnome-desktop

looks like a transient issue to me, and fixing it (to handle the error better) is definitely an upstream issue
