Does that mean I need to file it upstream; or upstream is working on it? Does that also mean you verified that this issue exists outside of macports and outside of OS X?

Means you have to file it upstream. Didn't test on other platforms, but it's still quite obviously not a MacPorts issue.

While this is not likely an issue specific to MacPorts; it is definitely an issue specific to OS X; since tmux 1.1 has none of these problems on linux.
Does that not qualify it for investigation under the MacPorts trac? In order to establish an OS X-specific patch.

Still an upstream issue, if it's not handling this case correctly.

Also, it seems to work for me. Maybe an issue with your terminal settings.

The issue appears to be specific to iTerm; though screen works fine in it and outside of screen/tmux it works fine as well.
Filed upstream too, FWIW.
Upstream.
