Not able to 'import Scientific' after successfull macports installation of py26-scientific

I have installed port py26-scientific using Macports, but I am not able to use the installation. The installation goes very smooth, and does not complain about anything.

However, when running 'import Scientific' in a python environment I get 'No module named Scientific'. Re-installation, cleaning, updating the port does not change the outcome. Numpy is installed using macports, py26-numpy @1.3.0_0 (active), and works fine. The installation appears to work fine, I have the following installed and active,

$ port installed py26-scientific
The following ports are currently installed:
  py26-scientific @2.8_2+macosx (active)

Any help is highly appreciated. I do not know what is causing the trouble. Thank you

Yes I am using macports python (at least I hope). I'm working on a Snow Leopard system, OS X 10.6.3

Hmm... works for me! torgi, your output above tells me that python_select is installed and that you're using MacPorts python, but not that you are definitely, abolutely using MacPorts python2.6.

Can you please try running

   /opt/local/bin/python2.6 -E -c 'import Scientific'

from the command line?

If it exits with any error (an error-free run should have no output), please paste the output of the command

   /opt/local/bin/python2.6 -E -v -c 'import Scientific'

(same as the previous command with a -v flag for verbosity).

Thanks for locating the issue. Can you please help me with a fix for the problem?

I have selected python26 before installation of python scientific, and done this repeatedly, and even tried to reinstall py26-scientific with no success.

sudo python_select python26

Does not help. Do you have any idea of how to help python_select choose python26, or should I report this as a bug related to python_select? Thank you

I can offer a couple of suggestions; if they don't work, then filing a possible bug with python_select is a good idea. I stopped using python_select and gcc_select a while a go because I would constantly discover applications ignoring paths, versions, etc. Now I just specify everything explicitly. That's just my casual opinion, by the way, and should not be taken as an implicit statement that python_select is buggy!

For example, try running your scripts as python2.6. Usually that will run /opt/local/bin/python2.6, and you can check that with which python2.6. Depending on where /opt/local/bin is on your search path, python may be the system interpreter instead of the macports one, regardless of what python_select has done.

So (1) try running python as python2.6. (2) Try sudo python_select -d python26 and make sure it appears to have worked. (3) Try always invoking python as /opt/local/bin/python2.6 and see if the import problem goes away. Also, if python_select succeeds, try running python as /opt/local/bin/python directly - explicit paths are your friends.

I suspect, given your description of your problem, that somehow the system python is being run, somehow. The explicit path to macports will help diagnose where and why this is happening. Good luck!

What is the output of the following?

python_select -s

Also, run python and tell us the version of python it displays. Here's what it says for me where py26-scientific works fine:

Thank you all very much for your efforts. I found the error with my installation, the problem was with my ipython. The once I used was not the one installed by macport, and did not connect to the correct python version. So my python_select and the python scientific port works fine!
