I'm not sure why either. By assigning the ticket to me Joshua has indicated he thinks php5 is implicated, which seems likely since the thread that crashed was in libphp5.so. Do you have any php extensions installed, and if so, do you still see the problem if you disable them and restart apache2?
Hi all,
So sorry! I'm very new to this. Apologies for the mistakes!
Hi ryandesign:
I disabled LoadModule php5_module modules/libphp5.so in my httpd.conf and the crashing stopped. But of course since the majority of my site is .php files, nothing on the website really worked.
I have the following php related ports installed and active:
php5 @5.3.2_0+apache2+fastcgi+pear (active) php5-gd @5.3.2_1 (active) php5-mbstring @5.3.2_0 (active) php5-mcrypt @5.3.2_0 (active) php5-mysql @5.3.2_0+mysqlnd (active) php5-zip @5.3.2_0 (active) phpmyadmin @3.2.5_0 (active)
Any suggestions on what I should try to do to see what will stop it from crashing?

You will want to use WikiFormatting in your ticket comments and descriptions. Use the Preview button to make sure your formatting looks right before submitting.
So we know the problem is related to the php5 apache2 module. Good. (You also have the fastcgi variant selected... you are also using the php5 fastcgi executable?)
Test if those php extensions are causing the problem. Reactivate php5 and restart apache2 and confirm the problem comes back. Then deactivate php5-gd, php5-mbstring, php5-mcrypt, php5-mysql and php5-zip, then restart apache2 and see if the problem is still there.
What variant of apache2 is installed?
Are there any web requests being served? What's in the apache access log and error log?
comment:6 follow-up: 7 Changed 14 years ago by scott@…
re: php 5 fastcgi executable:
Not sure. I just built php5 with fastcgi in case I needed it later but I haven't gotten around to trying it out yet since I was having this issue.
Variant of apache: apache2 @2.2.15_1+preforkmpm (active)
Webpages are being served with out an issue, httpd just keeps crashing in the background.
Here's a sample of the error log:
[Thu Jun 10 05:53:25 2010] [notice] child pid 93195 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) [Thu Jun 10 05:58:54 2010] [notice] child pid 93167 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) [Thu Jun 10 06:00:33 2010] [notice] child pid 93243 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) [Thu Jun 10 06:00:42 2010] [notice] child pid 93137 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) [Thu Jun 10 06:01:20 2010] [notice] child pid 93194 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) [Thu Jun 10 06:01:31 2010] [notice] child pid 93165 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) [Thu Jun 10 06:02:11 2010] [notice] child pid 93254 exit signal Segmentation fault (11)
How should I disable to extensions to php5? Should I just rebuild php5 without the +fastcgi variant and test?
comment:7 Changed 14 years ago by ryandesign (Ryan Carsten Schmidt)
Replying to scott@…:
How should I disable to extensions to php5?
By deactivating the ports of those extensions:
sudo port deactivate php5-gd php5-mbstring php5-mcrypt php5-mysql php5-zip
and then restarting apache2.
Okay that fixed it.
I re-enabled php5-mysql and things are still working without any crashes.
I have a feeling this has to do with phpmyadmin because the other extensions were installed along with phpmyadmin.
comment:9 Changed 14 years ago by ryandesign (Ryan Carsten Schmidt)
Can you identify specifically which extension is causing the crash? Re-enable them one by one until you figure out which one it is. phpmyadmin is just a web app so it can't really be causing the crash itself; if apache is crashing while someone is using phpmyadmin it's probably because it's trying to use a particular extension at that moment.
comment:10 Changed 14 years ago by scott@…
Oops! I spoke too soon. The crash is back.
It seemed to have returned when I re-enabled php5-mysql. I'm going to run it for a few minutes off and see if that stops the crashing. Will report back shortly.
comment:11 Changed 14 years ago by scott@…
It is indeed php5-mysql. Turning it off stopped the crashes altogether.
Is there anything else you'd like me to look at?
comment:12 Changed 14 years ago by ryandesign (Ryan Carsten Schmidt)
And you can have all the other php extensions enabled and there's no problem?
What version of mysql is it talking to? Is mysql running on the same server or a different one?
You could try rebuilding php5-mysql with a different variant. By default it uses the mysqlnd variant, but you could try the mysql5 variant instead. To do so:
sudo port install php5-mysql +mysql5
comment:13 Changed 14 years ago by scott@…
I know it's php5-mysql because i've left phpmyadmin and all the rest of the extensions off and it only crashes with php5-mysql.
MySQL is
mysql5 @5.1.47_0 (active) mysql5-server @5.1.47_0 (active)
and it's running on the same server.
I'll try to rebuild using the variants you described and report back.
comment:14 Changed 14 years ago by scott@…
I just tried the php5-mysql +mysql5 option, and it seems to crash less, but still crashes.
Anything else I should try?
comment:15 Changed 14 years ago by scott@…
I tried a few other things last night to see if I could resolve this on my own but It still seems to be php5-mysql that is the culprit. Any other suggestions?

Sorry I have not responded to this ticket in a year, but I didn't know what else to suggest. Were you ever able to resolve it? If not, all of these ports have been updated in the past year, so try updating them.

alex, yours is clearly a different issue from the one in this ticket; yours is caused by you having had libraries (namely libdb-4.8.dylib) in /usr/local at the time that you installed the apache2 port, and it linked with that db library, and you then removed that db library, which is why you now get an error that it can't be found. This kind of problem is why we don't support users installing things in /usr/local. Please remove anything left in /usr/local, then rebuild apache2 and any other port you built during the time you had things in /usr/local.

php5-mysql is replaced by php53-mysql. Is this still relevant?
