ghostview fails to open files

Building and installing procedure ok, but when execute gv, trying to open a file, for instance an eps file, no output is displayed. Gv messages window shows error string: 

Chdir to 9999 x 9999 failed: No such file or directory

Snow Leopard 10.6.4, iMac 26" sept. 2006
