I assume you've python_select'ed python 3?
why would i want to do that? there is no dependency on Python 3 that i can see in the VLC documentation

confirmed on VLC wiki .. no need to have Python to build VLC .. is there something in Py 3 needed for installation because it is a port package?

What I meant was having python 3 selected is probably why the build is failing.
