Description
When I try to install Scala, I get the error message:
Please use one of the numbered scala* ports instead.
I don't know which version to install, I'm just trying to follow a Scala Hello World tutorial.
The scala meta port should pick a good default port.

What Ryan said is correct. Treat the Scala ports as the Python ports.
I recommend picking the 2.8 one unless you know you need the older 2.7 version.

Please point scala to scala28. I installed MacPorts to make these decisions for me so I could get on with Scala programming.

Instead of pointing it at 2.8, the scala port is going to be deleted in the near future.
Also, 2.9 will be out soon and it's not the place of MacPorts to pick the specific version of Scala to use, as choosing a version requires knowledge of what work you want to do, what libraries you need, etc. There's a lot of factors in picking a Scala version.

If most users will pick the stable version (2.8), just point to that. This gives experienced Scala programmers the choice, and allows newbies to get on with learning Scala.
The scala port is not a meta port. It is a stub port. It will be deleted later.
Please pick one of the numbered scala* ports to install.
