Hi,
I'm trying to install apache2 using the following command: sudo port install apache2
Here are the error messages I'm getting:
port -f activate expat Error: Insufficient privileges to write to MacPorts install prefix. Matthew-Caruanas-MacBook-Pro:~ matthewcaruana$ sudo port install apache2 Password: ---> Computing dependencies for apache2 ---> Dependencies to be installed: apr-util expat libiconv gperf sqlite3 ncurses ncursesw readline openssl zlib pcre bzip2 perl5 perl5.12 ---> Activating expat @2.0.1_1 Error: Target org.macports.activate returned: Image error: /opt/local/bin/xmlwf already exists and does not belong to a registered port. Unable to activate port expat. Use 'port -f activate expat' to force the activation. Error: Failed to install expat Log for expat is at: /opt/local/var/macports/logs/_opt_local_var_macports_sources_rsync.macports.org_release_ports_textproc_expat/main.log Error: The following dependencies were not installed: apr-util expat libiconv gperf sqlite3 ncurses ncursesw readline openssl zlib pcre bzip2 perl5 perl5.12 Error: Status 1 encountered during processing. To report a bug, see <http://guide.macports.org/#project.tickets>
Please find the error log file attached to this ticket.
Seeing that the command 'port -f activate expat' was recommended, I tried running that.
And it gives me the following error:
port -f activate expat Error: Insufficient privileges to write to MacPorts install prefix.
Could you please help me with this problem?
Thanks, Matthew C.

Please remember to preview and use WikiFormatting, fill in the Port field and cc the maintainer.
There's a problem hotlist entry for this: ProblemHotlist#xmlwf
"Insufficient privileges" is because you didn't use sudo.

Right. Neither of these are bugs in the port. Nothing to do here. For technical support with MacPorts, write to the macports-users list.
I only want to add that MacPorts was not recommending or suggesting that you use "-f
". Rather, MacPorts was stating that if you understand the consequences, then you can use "-f
" to proceed. Using "-f
" is however usually not what you want to do in this situation.
