On OS X Lion.
config.log states:
clang: error: argument to '-V' is missing (expected 1 value)
Building without +universal works fine.

Please file a ticket for each affected port.
Google seems to suggest this is a bug in clang, that has been fixed, so perhaps a new version of Xcode will fix it. What version of Xcode are you running?

Looks like an old bug. My clang is a later version than that mentioned as fixed:
$ clang -v Apple clang version 3.0 (tags/Apple/clang-210.3) (based on LLVM 3.0svn) Target: x86_64-apple-darwin11.0.0 Thread model: posix

I don't think we're going to do anything about this. No log was provided, but it apparently only affects (by now) very old versions of clang.
