teTeX install puts supposedly system-wide fmt files under home directory

Description

There's a misfeature in the post-install process for teTeX:

The .fmt files latex.fmt, tex.fmt, etc. *should* go in the system-wide directory /opt/local/share/texmf/ web2c, but instead they are in a local directory ~/.texmf-var. The problem seems to be that /opt/local/ share/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf is set up to put them there by default, for some strange reason.

teTeX successfully compiled on Tiger with gcc 3.3.
