I can't reproduce your problem. Please paste (or attach) the output of port -v outdated. Which version of OS X are you running? Did you recently upgrade your operating system?
10.7.1 update a few weeks ago. Occurs after running selfupdate in interactive mode.
~>port -v outdated No installed ports are outdated. ~>sudo port Password: MacPorts 2.0.1 Entering interactive mode... ("help" for help, "quit" to quit) [Users/ted] > list outdated [Users/ted] > selfupdate ---> Updating the ports tree ---> Updating MacPorts base sources using rsync MacPorts base version 2.0.1 installed, MacPorts base version 2.0.1 downloaded. ---> MacPorts base is already the latest version The ports tree has been updated. To upgrade your installed ports, you should run port upgrade outdated [Users/ted] > list outdated
lists everything

Behaves correctly. See FAQ.

I can see how that's a little surprising, but 'outdated' does resolve to no ports in this case, and 'port list' is documented to list all available ports when no ports are given to it.
Note: See
TracTickets for help on using
tickets.
