Description
"gv: Unable to open the display".
I have to open a new terminal window and log into the remote server again to get the gv work. After about 20 minutes, the same problem will show up again, i.e. type "gv" will get "gv: Unable to open the display" notice and everything about gv could not work anymore unless you open another new terminal window.
This problem only happens on the new Mac OS X Lion system and has been confirmed by other two computers with Lion system installed. My old Tiger and Leopard or Snow Leopard systems never have this question. The remote server we used is Ubuntu 10.04 LTS version. The gv was installed via the MacPorts tools.

I'm sorry, I don't have Lion. I'm about to update gv to 3.7.3; if the problem persists with that version, please report the problem to the developers of gv.

For completeness: This is actually a security feature of SSH (at least on Apple clients), where the X cookie times out. Try "ssh -XY remhost" instead, and the cookie should persist longer than a thousand seconds. Hope this helps .... it caught me out too.
