I can't remember seeing this error on any Linux box before.
Also, if I choose the online version of the user manual (Preferences->Help System), I get a similar are error when I open help:
help Message Could not open 'http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-help.xml' for reading: Operation not supported Perhaps you are missing GIO backends and need to install GVFS?
I'm under the impression there is something fundamentally wrong with gvfs...

Summary: | gimp2: can't open files from remote URIs → gimp2 @2.6.11: can't open files from remote URIs |
---|
Is this still a problem with the current version?

Yes, the +gvfs
variant still fails to open remote image files. The online help system works now as expected, however.
But it's not specific to gimp:
$ gio info https://trac.macports.org/chrome/site/MacPorts.png gio: https://trac.macports.org/chrome/site/MacPorts.png: Operation not supported
Might be a dupe of #32652

Note: See
TracTickets for help on using
tickets.
Do you have reason to believe this is specific to MacPorts? If not, you should report the problem to the developers of the software.
See also #32652, a similar report but for gvfs.
