I tried deactivating the port and -f update.....

You must not have upgraded your ports in over a year; this was a hot problem quite some time ago after the perl ports were changed in r76485. In the future, you should upgrade more frequently.

sudo port upgrade perl5.8
" first. Then you can continue upgrading the rest of the outdated ports.
