For Mountain Lion, w3m probably needs the same sed fix that's been applied to some other ports already. Like r95011.

I tried putting the same two lines as in r95011 in the Portfile of w3m, and I tried "unset LANG" before sudo port install w3m, but to no avail. Build log included.

While the log contains sed: RE error: illegal byte sequence
, it doesn't seem to affect the build process. With #35429 fixed the build seems to work fine for me, and so does w3m. Since the build failed, we don't even have to rev-bump w3m.
