Please consider applying this patch which adds the -d and -D switches that were available in eyeD3 0.6.x https://bitbucket.org/nicfit/eyed3/issue/28/id3-tags-discnumber-and-totaldiscs-should https://bitbucket.org/nicfit/eyed3/commits/d4dd453bd7f7

This has been incorporated in later releases of eyeD3.
I've upgraded to latests 0.7.3.
Thanks for reporting and sorry for the delay: I didn't have access to the mac to test it.
