File Labelling on Samba share

Description

Hi, I'm running Samba 3.6.15 via Macports 2.2.0, got a query re: File Labelling. Our mac mini 10.8.4 server used to share via afp but we went over to macports/samba because of the well-documented disaster of Apple's ML Server app.
File labelling is widely used to mark our files as, say, green=ok, red=do not use. However, changes made to the file labelling from the client end while logged in via smb do not show up when viewing the server itself.
Can anyone advise where the label data is being stored & know how to export/migrate it? I gather in theory its due to the HFS+ attributes of the file but how does it look different when viewed from the client end compared to the server?
