For what it's worth, this appears to be an issue with vtk compiling under the new Mavericks compiler/library scheme, and isn't a MacPorts problem per se. The word on the vtk wiki is that the vtk master that's currently available under git supports Mavericks, but none of the older versions do.

I can now report that the VTK 6 master available from the VTK git repository installs pretty cleanly and easily under 10.9 once the following patch is installed:

VTK 5.X is on the way out, perhaps the right way forward for this port is to transition to VTK 6.
