Nothing jumps out as obviously wrong in what you are doing. There is not much I can do about internal compiler errors. Is there a reason you prefer gcc45 rather than a newer version? Gcc48 is the latest stable release and seems to work quite well.

no particular reason (as far as i can see any other libs that require it).
uninstalling it and re-installing as +gcc48 variant solved the problem (with countless curses inbetween...), thanks very much :).

So this must be more of a problem in gcc45 (that has been fixed in later releases of gcc) and not a bug in arpack. I am closing this ticket.
