I would like to request an option to make the port depend on any version of Perl, not just hardcoding 5.12.
See intltool's Portfile for example.

Interesting. Indeed I both opened the ticket and committed a change in r123814 without ever realising the open ticket.
Actually my initial request was to support multiple versions of Perl, but supporting just the latest one should probably be fine for now. Otherwise the other ticket contains a reference to r126932 (see #43193) for example. That one could be implemented as well, but it's not a strict requirement.
