What is build_arch set to in your macports.conf? The correct value for OS X 10.9 would be x86_64. The only way I can think of for you to encounter this error is if you set build_arch to an invalid value.
Also, if you are still on MacPorts 2.3.0 or older, please run "sudo port selfupdate" to update to 2.3.1 which was just released.
