MPlayer @1.1_8 +osd does not produce osd

With OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, XCode Version 3.2.6:

This plays foo.webm just fine, and ​the usual MPlayer keyboard commands for Pause, Seek, Fullscreen, etc work just fine as well.

However, no keyboard commands relating to the on-screen display ("OSD") have any effect. For example, pressing the "o" key does nothing.

So, after looking at the ​fonts-osd chapter of the MPlayer docs, I tried a few possible workarounds, without success, as follows:

$ mplayer -font /Library/Fonts/Arial.ttf foo.webm

I performed the following checks and cannot see a reason why all of the above should have failed:
