I've tried with gPodder, I don't see any change in French locale (still Quit, not Quitter). I don't know how GtkOSXApplication.strings is found.

Really? I just checked the french string file

In theory if your system is set to a language, it should just work as long as the .iproj folders are in the app's Resources folder. (I don't know about the macports installed location.) The gtk-osx-application library looks for .string files labeled GtkosxApplication. Before all the files were mislabeled GtkOSXApplication and it wouldn't work, but that should be fixed now. Works in the OSX Xboard app anyway.
