Can not change application colors via KDE System settings

Description
On kubuntu it is possible to change KDE applications colors via System Settings>Application Appearance>Colors. You can just choose a color, click apply and the colors are changed.
On macports KDE this doesn't seem to work, the default gray color remains after you attempt to change colors.
It seems possible to change widget styles though.
