This is the same symptom as #44480, #44849, #45528, and #50054. The build fails due to the file /usr/lib/libiconv.la which is not under the control of the port build system. /usr/lib/libiconv.la does not appear on my system, but .dylib and .a forms are in /usr/lib/. Get rid of the .la file and the port will build successfully.
Aside from building a check for that library and a warning message into the port (??), I'm not sure what we could do about the problem but suggestions are welcome.

Works on MacBook (Retina 12-inch, early 2015) and a 2015 Mac Pro, but not on the 15" MacBook Pro ((Retina, Mid 2012)
