xfig 3.2.5c SIGSEGV crash when quitting

when exiting xfig, i.e. with meta-q, the program does not terminate and the one of the following error messages is shown in the command window:
xfig3.2.5c: SIGSEGV signal trapped xfig: Figure is empty or not modified - exiting without saving.
or
xfig3.2.5c: X error trapped - error message follows: 0 Request code: <Unknown> xfig: Figure is empty or not modified - exiting without saving. [1]+ Segmentation fault: 11 xfig -noscalablefonts Vrh-Vce7-composed.fig
After that, the xfig job needs to be killed from the command line
The issue might be related to ticket #50934, supposedly solved

Usually, when a program crashes, OS X writes a crash log file in ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports. Take a look there, and if you see a log for this crash, please attach it here. However, it may be something that needs to be reported to and fixed by the developers of xfig.

probably related issue: xfig crashes also during editing of a figure
xfig3.2.5c: SIGSEGV signal trapped xfig: Figure is empty or not modified - exiting without saving.
the xfig editing window freezes, but xfig keeps running and needs to be terminated, e.g. from within top the OS X crash log is attached
