tiff and gawk install hangs on/after package download: problem with curl?

"port install tiff" fails; it appears to hang on the tiff package download. See below for my system configuation and port verbose/debug output. As you can see, port succeeds in downloading the file, but hangs at the end of the download. Rerunning the command has no effect.

ftp to the server shows that the file is a hair larger than the file left in /opt/local/var/db/dports/ distfiles/tiff.

This happens for the gawk package too (in addition to tiff).

This problem blocks the intallation of dependent packages such as teTeX, ImageMagick, and xv.

The culprit seems to be curl. It hangs on some ftp downloads, e.g.

Upgrading from curl 7.13.1 to 7.15.0 seems to have fixed this problem:
