NeoMutt releases stalled for a year, so a recent update might have introduced some bugs. Please report the issue upstream at https://github.com/neomutt/neomutt/issues if there's no existing report.

I compiled mutt (not neomutt) on my machine and it works without problems. Either the neomutt port is broken or neomutt is broken on actual macOS Cataline. JFYI.
Unfortunately, there is no port of mutt but only of neomutt in MacPorts.

Since you are knowledgeable enough to compile mutt from source, have you tried to compile neomutt from source? Does the issue persist?
I am the maintainer of neomutt
in MacPorts. I don't have a Catalina system to test this first hand, nor I will have in the foreseeable future. In case this repeats when compiling from source I strongly recommend you to submit this issue upstream.

compiling out of sources neomutt is working, too used ./configure --gpgme --gdbm

Interesting. Did you try installing the variant +homespool
?

I just did migrate. Had neomutt @20180716_1+gpgme+idn+mutt
