But now every port that used python27 because that was the default for boost will need to be updated to use python37.

hmmm ... maybe but not necessarily I think. I didn't rev-bump the port, and since this is a variant whatever is installed still remains. And, updates will use the same variant unless enforced otherwise ... yes? If so, then I don't see this as an issue in an immediate sense, because user's installs will not change, and whatever in their install required Boost +python27 will remain intact until they tell it otherwise. Or, am I missing something here?

What about new users who have not yet installed boost or the ports that require its python support?
