failed during port upgrade outdated command. main.log file shows "config.status: error: could not create common.shi"

this is an irritating problem that I thought we had finally defeated.

Please do this: 

sudo port -f uninstall gawk

and you should be good to go with your build.

this is an irritating problem that I thought we had finally defeated.

We did, in #58011.

The reporter presumably hasn't upgraded in over a year. No need to uninstall gawk, simply upgrading it will work.
