MacPorts 2.6.2 does not build anything on Mac OS 10.4 (x86)

Description
After installing MacPorts 2.6.2 on Mac OS 10.4 (x86), I noticed none of the packages would build. What I found out is there is a dependence on a command called xcode-select. This command is not available on Mac OS 10.4. Even taking Mac OS 10.6's version of this command and trying to use in Mac OS 10.4 does not make MacPorts 2.6.2 work.
The solution to this problem is to use MacPorts 2.1.3 from here: https://distfiles.macports.org/MacPorts/MacPorts-2.1.3-10.4-Tiger.dmg

Why don't you try to install a current version of MacPorts and tell us what happens?

Please show us exactly what command you ran and exactly what error message occurred. As Ken said, MacPorts 2.6.2 should work fine on Tiger; that's why we continue to offer MacPorts installers for Tiger.
The solution to this problem is to use MacPorts 2.1.3 from here: https://distfiles.macports.org/MacPorts/MacPorts-2.1.3-10.4-Tiger.dmg
Installing an older version of MacPorts should automatically upgrade to the latest version of MacPorts, so that should not have made a difference.

The code that requires xcode-select might possibly be reached on Tiger if you don't have both Xcode and the Command Line Tools (or whatever it's called on Tiger) installed? So double check that you do. https://guide.macports.org/#installing.xcode.other

I am able to run MacPorts 2.6.2 on Mac OS 10.4.11 now. I am not sure where the glitch is.

Let's close this one out as a "works for me" then, and we'll see if it comes around again some day. Feel free to add new info / reopen if so.
Let's see if we can get you sorted out.
I have MacPorts 2.62 running on 10.4 PPC and 10.4 Intel right now, and it installed without any trouble at all.
and with a very large number of current ports installed as well:
