Did you update your OS recently? If so, you need to follow the wiki:Migration instructions. Note that i386 is no longer supported by the 10.14 and later SDKs.

Sounds like you're using the 10.14 SDK or later. You can't build ports with the +universal variant with the 10.14 SDK or later.
