Description
[fyi] Just a heads up: Saw a tweet that youtube-dl
has been taken down…
Here's the DCMA: https://github.com/github/dmca/blob/master/2020/10/2020-10-23-RIAA.md
port fetch
worked fine (wanted to download a copy for backup), but the code on GitHub is not available.

Have no idea how this will affect us, &/or if RIAA is going to go after other hosts (eg like package managers) for hosting the code or not. Was just the initial thought I had after reading it.

Summary: | youtube-dl: DCMA → youtube-dl: DMCA |

Notwithstanding GitHub's removal of the repository I do not know the validity of the RIAA's request that the repository be removed. I am not a lawyer. Nobody has asked us to remove the port yet, so for now I will keep the port.
MacPorts is neither the developer of this software nor the end user; we are an intermediary making the software available to the user. It is the responsibility of the user to determine the legality in their jurisdiction of using any particular software, whether acquired through MacPorts or other means.

I fully agree. It was most to bring the takedown to attention, in case…

It looks like they work on a solution. GitHub's SEO ('nat') have appearently reached out to help them back online (1, 2). He also made this one.
…and someone have used an old GitHub 'wontfix' bug to attach a commit to the dmca repo: https://github.com/github/dmca/tree/416da574ec0df3388f652e44f7fe71b1e3a4701f
I'm carefully optimistic it'll return to GitHub, in some way - if not, they have their own site.

Was going to write a bout a fix I found yesterday, but it looks like they have updated their site now with a new version: 2020.11.01.1
Made a PR for that: https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/9008

The takedown has been overturned.

Looks like they've updated their hompeage: https://yt-dl.org and added a download page: https://yt-dl.org/download.html (incl sig/keys etc).

This also showed up an hour ago or so: https://gitlab.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl, but I have no idea if that (really) is “ytdl-org”, or just some random fan making it available again - since there's no reference to the GitLab page from the homepage.
