it requires an X11 server to work, unless you install the +quartz variant.

This one is ours:

https://ports.macports.org/port/xorg-server/details/

or you can use XQuartz.

I suspect that is your issue. Please report back if that does/doesn’t fix you up.

Note that GTK3 apps built with the +quartz variants are currently broken on Apple Silicon machines; see: https://trac.macports.org/ticket/64742

Hello, I am new to using Xquartz and don't have much idea regarding it. As far as what I have seen until now is I should use Xquartz to login to a remote linux server and use edit on that remote server (GUI or non-GUI based) Is my understanding right regarding this? If not please correct me.

I have MacPorts and Xquartz installed on the computer.

All I need is gedit to open the code files saved on my Mac computer. Can I know the steps or link to any guide which tells how to get that done?

Thank you.

Install xorg-server (sudo port install xorg-server). (or Xquartz).

logout. log back in.

Done.

In the past, I have advocated for xorg-server to be an automatic install for users for this reason.

That approach was declined as we want people to be able to use XQuartz.app instead if they so choose.

Now -- if you have Xquartz installed already, you have logged out and logged back in, or perhaps better even, rebooted your system, and it doesn't work, then there is some other issue going on to be discovered.
