before we import this, I suggest we repo-move print/freetype to print/freetype2 (since it's the 2.x version) and import this as print/freetype1.

to be pragmatic ... why doesnt we import this as freetype1 and leave freetype2 as freetype. This does require much/any work, and i really dont think its ugly.
If so, let me reassign bugs 678, 679 and 680 to me and i'll take care of it.
